MAPPING MILESTONES

On December 4, 2008, 3TIER unveiled a 5 km resolution global wind map based upon the most accurate, consistent and comprehensive dataset of wind resources and their spatial and temporal variability ever created. To produce the map and dataset, 3TIER implemented an innovative physical-statistical model, and ran the model through a 10-year simulation. A clickable version of the map, displaying average annual wind speed across the globe will also be available at firstlook.3tier.com in January 2009.

On October 13, 2008, 3TIER released the world’s first contiguous map of solar resources in the Western Hemisphere at a resolution roughly 3 times that of existing U.S. solar maps, and based on an 11-year time series. The single most important value, the annual average Global Horizontal Irradiance (GHI), can be found for any location in the Western Hemisphere at firstlook.3tier.com.

Over the coming months, 3TIER will continue to map solar and wind resources for the world, country by country, based upon a priority order that takes into account such issues as renewable energy policies, availability of renewable energy resources and economic status.
